  9. Please take a moment to read this before posting to comp.unix.wizards
  10. for the first time.

  12. comp.unix.wizards is for unmoderated, in-depth discussion of advanced
  13. unix topics.
  14.  
  15. Elementary questions do not belong in comp.unix.wizards.  For example,
  16. technical socket questions can be appropriate but "How do I program
  17. with sockets?" is too basic for comp.unix.wizards.
  18.  
  19. Many questions about usage of unix editors, shells, utilities, vendor-
  20. specific system administration, and unix folklore usually elicit better
  21. responses in other newsgroups.
  22.  
  23. Crossposting to comp.unix.wizards and comp.unix.questions is
  24. inappropriate.  Plenty of wizards read comp.unix.questions and answer
  25. questions there.  (KILL file users who would like to skip all
  26. crossposted articles are invited to use "/Newsgroups:.*,/h:j").

  28. A wizard is someone who can rewrite the entire system from scratch.  If
  29. you are not a wizard (as I am not), you are welcome to follow along the
  30. discussions anyway (as I do).  You'll learn quite a bit about how UNIX
  31. works.  Caution:  customarily, only those who are themselves "unix
  32. wizards" should post to comp.unix.wizards.

  34. For a list of answers to frequently asked questions (FAQ), please refer
  35. to comp.unix.questions (or comp.lang.c, comp.answers, etc...).  "How do
  36. I delete a file whose name starts with a '-' ?" is an example of such a
  37. question.  Please do not ask or answer FAQ's on the net.

  39. The unix-wizards mailing list, which consisted of periodic digests of
  40. this newsgroup, is currently inactive.
  41.  
  42. This message is posted to comp.unix.wizards weekly, with a 60 day
  43. expire time and no supersession.  The reason for this is to improve the
  44. likelihood that this article will be the oldest article in the
  45. newsgroup.  Hopefully, by doing this, a few more new users will see
  46. this article first, before they just dive right in.

  48. E-mail comments about this posting are welcome.  From time to time I'll
  49. summarize them.
